Milford Explorers Post 29 Receives an "American Star" Award

May, 2002 - The Milford Police Department's Exploring Law Enforcement Post 29 has been selected by the Officers and Board of Trustees of America The Beautiful Fund of Washington, DC to receive an "American Star" Award for their efforts in good citizenship. These "American Star" awards are being presented to top volunteer civic, cultural, heritage and environmental projects in the country to serve as models of creative citizen service.

The Milford Post 29 was selected for the honor to recognize this educational program that gives young people an inside look at a career in law enforcement while at the same time, helping their neighbors. The mission of the Milford Explorers is to dedicate themselves to the community. The young people in the Post have volunteered hundreds of hours on projects doing just that.

The Explorers are a role model for the youths of Milford , as well as other groups looking to improve their community.

The America the Beautiful Fund is a National non-profit organization started in 1965 to encourage volunteer citizen efforts and to project the natural and historic beauty of America. The Milford Exploring Project is coordinated by Carlos A. Sousa, Jr. Trooper Christine O'Hara, and Officer John Tiernan.

William H. Spurgeon III Award

The highest recognition for individuals and organizations making an outstanding contribution to America’s youth through the Learning for Life programs.

Background The William H. Spurgeon III Award was developed in 1971 in honor of the man who is regarded as the major leader in the development of special-interest Exploring. Spurgeon, a business executive at the Irvine Company in Southern California, personally organized many special-interest posts in the 1960s. He served for many years as a member of the National BSA Council Executive Board and National Exploring Committee. His pioneering efforts led to the present Exploring program. He devoted much of the late 1960s to promote exploring and is particularly remembered as a dynamic speaker for Exploring Impact Plan luncheons across America. Spurgeon passed away in 1970.

Purpose The award is designed for council use to recognize individuals or organizations contributing significant leadership to the Exploring program. The award is also presented regionally and nationally.
